Although in the past graphic designers (logo designers) were hired on the basis of a great portfolio. However, times have changed and experts in the graphic design industry have suggested that potential logo designers may pursue a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, logo design, or a closely related field.
Most employers also prefer designers to have a bachelor’s degree, although some assistant jobs are available for those who have an associate’s degree or a degree in another field but take graphic design classes to qualify for the job.
Students should decide about their career goals, how much time and money they are willing to invest in their education, and what programs – graphic design and/or more specifically logo design – the school offers. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) currently offers art and design programs in about 320 postsecondary schools, but very few people with a concentration on logo design offer a degree in graphic design.
Some programs require students to complete at least one year of art and design courses before submitting to a formal degree program or submit a sample of their work instead. Most schools offer classes in computer design software, commercial graphics production, design policy, studio art, printing techniques, typography, color theory, and website design.
Common design software for logo creation includes Illustrator, LogoMaker, LaughingBird, SummitSoft Logo Design Studio Pro, and LogoS. Completion of coursework in marketing and business and writing will be advised. Also, many programs allow students to create a professional portfolio of their work that demonstrates their creative skills to future employers and is often necessary for getting a job.
It is also important for designers to keep up to date with new and updated computer software programs used in the design. To keep designers ’skills up-to-date, there are many associations like AIGA that offer expertise and classes in graphic design to master advanced techniques and refine their craft.
Often, colleges and universities, as well as non-governmental organizations, offer students the opportunity to do internships at local advertising or design companies, newspapers, or the staff of a magazine or other publication.
The experience of working side by side with professional designers is invaluable and individuals are able to see the design process from start to finish and better understand what it takes to create a memorable logo.
